Acceleration programme on industry 4.0 through an open innovation platform that connects startups with forefront companies in the advanced manufacturing, energy, healthcare and agri-food sectors.

Summary: This acceleration service is a public-private initiative launched by the Basque Government, Spain, together with trailblazer large industrial enterprises. It is targeted at industry 4.0 startups with solutions applied to advanced manufacturing, energy, healthcare and agrifood sectors that need further development. The acceleration program has been designed, in part, to attract and promote innovation and to position the Basque region as number one on the international level for industrial activity, participation in the program is free and there is no equity taken from collaborating startups.

One of the greatest advantages of this program Is that it counts on the involvement of more than 50 leading companies in Industry 4.0 that act as corporate partners of the acceleration program plus an important cast of expert mentors in technology and Industry 4.0 who work hand in hand with the startup participants throughout the entire program.

Since the first edition in 2016, over 100 startups have had their businesses accelerated through this program. More than 170 innovative 4.0 projects have been developed, which have realized turnover for participating startups of 4.5 million euros. The program, which has gained increasing interest from innovative startup companies, has received a total of more than 1,600 applications in the first four editions.

The program attracts talent from around the globe, wherein applications have been received from 6 continents and 78 countries and has undeniably established itself as a benchmark accelerator for innovative industrial projects at an international level.

After four years of steady work, the acceleration program has proven to be successful, capable of promoting the digital transformation of the industry and, in turn, accelerating new initiatives through the validation and incorporation of technologies in customer scenarios. A total of 38 startups participated in the 4th edition, in 2019, and developed 53 pilot projects in collaboration with 52 corporate partners. In the 5th edition, launched on 3rd July 2020, the number of industry-leading corporations has increased to 57 and expect to attract a higher number of startups and innovative industry 4.0 projects.
The Program is addressed to worldwide startups in the industry 4.0 field that have finished their technological development and are ready to finalize their product/service for launch to the market. Early stage and “idea phase” projects will not be accepted into this program.

The corporate partners are some of the world’s leading companies in the Industry 4.0 arena that work in the automotive, energy, telecom, machine-tools, aeronautics, health, food and railway industries. These companies are each developing new Industry 4.0 solutions and are eager to work with startups as a way to boost their innovation. They will propose to each selected Startup the chance to develop a real technical and or research project with monetary compensation. Selected startups will develop the project while learning the ins and outs of their business. The company will function as a customer as well as a resource for new technologies and networks, which the startup can use to develop its business and commercial tools. Startups get the unique opportunity to grow along with these companies.

Research and/or technical cooperation with financial support up to €150,000 is envisaged. Besides, the Program provides financial aid to foreign startups in order to support their living expenses. The corporate partner companies are open to discuss the exact type of cooperation with the potential startup partners.

The 5th edition was launched on 3rd July and is open until 11 September 2020. Interested start-ups will be guided to the Program and website. Applicants will receive a link to submit their proposal after creating an Expression of Interest.
