METHOD , DEVICE AND PROCESS FOR THE REDUCTION OF SO2 EMISSIONS IN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE'S WASTE GASES
In engines using high sulfur fuels, the waste gases are characterized by a high content of sulfur dioxide (SO2) which is harmful to the environment, since it is responsible for the production of sulfuric acid in the atmosphere and the occurrence of acid rain. New shipping regulations require a drastic reduction of SO2 emissions by all ships to 85%. The present invention discloses a method which aims at the catalytic conversion of SO2 to elemental sulfur, valuing the CO, hydrocarbons and Nox via catalytic converters similar to those used in the automotive industry for gasoline engine exhaust. There is also described the process and apparatus according to which SO2 ( in the waste gas stream) is converted to elemental S by said method. For effective treatment of toxic pollutants, the above device is placed in series with the particles filter being set at the flue gas stream.
