Integrated manufacturing of REciclable multi-material COmposites for the TRANSport sector
Prediction of Aircraft Noise Impact with Application to Hong Kong International Airport
As part of a collective research effort towards greener aviation, the present study focuses on the noise impact of aircraft operations around major airports. To this end, an aircraft noise prediction platform is developed, which relies on state-of-the-art functionalities as well as more specific, innovative features. Originally built upon the Aircraft Noise and Performance (ANP) database and its Noise–Power–Distance (NPD) table, the method is further refined to alleviate most of their inherent limitations (e.g., standardized and simplified aircraft noise scenarios). The resulting aircraft noise prediction platform is validated against benchmark cases of increasing complexity, being then applied to real-life situations involving actual aircraft operations around Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). Specific comparative analyses are conducted, which allow highlighting the variability of the noise impact by aircraft, depending on their type (A330, B777) and/or operational conditions (power settings, meteorological conditions, routes, banks, etc.). The study delivers insightful outcomes, whether phenomenological (aircraft noise impact) or methodological (aircraft noise prediction). She is currently conducting her PhD studies at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, with a special focus on Intelligent Transportation and Greener Aviation. Prior to that, her research focused on the development of advanced multi-objective optimization algorithms and their application to aerospace problems (e.g., aerodynamic optimization) and the improvement of the near space information support platform. This led her to publish three peer-reviewed papers (two journal articles and an international conference paper, the latter of which received the best paper award). During her undergraduate studies, she also won the Chinese national excellence award for the Undergraduate Design Competition in Aerospace.Stephane RedonnetProf. Redonnet holds a MSc (dual degree in Math and Physics, with honors), a PhD (with very high honors), and an Accreditation to Supervise Research (French 'Habilitation', equivalent to UK's DSc). Before joining HKUST, he was Senior Research Fellow at ONERA (French National Aerospace Research Center), where he served for about twenty years. As such, he was involved in various large-scale initiatives gathering major stakeholders of the aerospace research, worldwide (industry, academia, official bodies). This led him to work closely with various industries (e.g., Airbus), to cooperate for a decade with NASA (where he spent 1.5 years as Visiting Researcher), and to engage in worldwide governance initiatives (e.g., the International Forum for Aviation Research, which he chaired the working group devoted to aircraft noise mitigation). This led him to work closely with various industries (e.g., Airbus), to cooperate for a decade with NASA (where he spent 1.5 years as Visiting Researcher), and to engage in worldwide governance initiatives (e.g., the International Forum for Aviation Research, which he chaired the working group devoted to aircraft noise mitigation).
